Quality decisions during the production process of hot and cold metal coils, and of metal sheets, have a significant effect on the quality of the end product and on the cost effectiveness of the entire production process. Quality demands for these raw materials are rising to new standards while producers are seeking cost effective ways to improve the production process.
EVS provides the metal coil and sheet industry with Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) systems for quality inspection in the various production lines and stages: rolling, cutting, pickling, galvanizing or coating stage. Our system configuration is adjusted to the line speed and width, and to the physical constraints of the specific production line.
The Inspection Process
EVS automatic optical inspection systems for the metal coil and sheet industry are designed to meet the quality needs of the end user at the metal production line. Speed varies between very slow (20m/min) and very fast (700m/min), in accordance with the process type (rolling, cutting and length, galvanizing, coating, etc.). Typical detectable defect size is between 0.5mm – 1mm.
The hardware of the system is designed to fit line structure constrains (space limitations), in almost all existing production lines. Typical width of inspected metal coils and sheets ranges between 1m and 3m.
Slit lines can be added prior to the inspection, when the width of each slit is known in advance and fixed. This enables the operator to monitor defects per slit, in the defects map, and also to issue a report per slit.
The typical inspection location is at the exit of each production line, after rolling, galvanizing, coating, etc.

- Each camera is equipped with a Local Control Unit, capable of transmitting and receiving standard signals to or from external electronic devices
System Modules:
EIP - Embedded Image Processing integrates the video camera with the image processing hardware and software. With the implementation of EIP the system reliability is increased, the number of components is reduced, the installation process becomes significantly easier and maintenance costs go down.
QST - Quick Style Tuning provides feedback from the video album review to the inspection instruction file. It enables rapid optimization of the inspection process of new styles, enhances detection while minimizing over-detection.
DSA - Defect Sorting Algorithm enables better definition of defect categories for an automatic sorting of defects into groups.
